His Excellency Eng. Abdullah A. Al-Mogbel, chairman of the International Road Federation, announced today the winners of the 2014 Global Road Achievement Awards competition. The 2014 awards honor nine projects from around the world, each leading the way in innovation and excellence in its respective area of the road industry. The selection was made by an international panel of senior road development specialists.

Indonesia’s Vice-Minister of Public Works, Eng. Hermanto Dardak, has been awarded the International Road Federation’s highest and most prestigious individual distinction.

The IRF Fellowship Program provides a one-time graduate level scholarship to young professionals who have strong academic backgrounds, professional qualifications, leadership potential, and a commitment to return to their respective home countries after graduation. Students selected for the Class of 2016 will also participate in the 10-day IRF Road Scholar Program, held in Washington, D.C. in January.

Federal Republic of Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan will deliver the opening address on the occasion of the 1st IRF Africa Regional Congress on June 4 in Abuja, Nigeria. Dr. Jonathan has been Nigeria's head of state since 2010, having previously served as federal vice president, as well as governor of the state of Bayelsa.

With more than 160 delegates from 28 countries gathered in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the IRF’s Caribbean Regional Congress has once again established itself as the premier event where transportation policy makers and practitioners can discuss and offer solutions to the region’s growing infrastructure needs.

The International Road Federation has awarded its annual Caribbean Regional Find a Way Award to the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Transport in recognition of the government’s commitment to the United Nations Decade of Action goal of stabilizing and then reducing global road traffic fatalities by 2020.

The International Road Federation published today Volume 1 of the IRF Examiner, a freely available periodical journal featuring peer-reviewed technical papers by leading industry professionals. The Spring 2014 edition of the IRF Examiner addresses life-saving road safety applications ranging from school zone safety projects in Abu Dhabi to rumble strips on rural highways.

Magid Elabyad, a long-serving IRF staff member is appointed Vice-President for International Programs & Member Services with immediate effect. In this role, Elabyad will oversee the IRF’s training programs and regional capacity building initiatives in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa as well as East Asia, and contribute to building stronger relationships with members throughout these regions.
