Overview

"Pavement Management Systems (PMS) have been designed to provide valuable information on the functional and structural condition of roads, aiming to offer road users a smooth and safe ride at the lowest cost possible for road owners. These systems also play a crucial role in providing decision-makers with reliable data for maintenance and rehabilitation planning and funding.

Traditionally, PMS systems supported reactive maintenance, where roads were repaired using standard methods only after visible damage had occurred on the pavement. However, recent advancements in digitalization, survey techniques, and a better understanding of road deterioration mechanisms and pavement failures have paved the way for proactive maintenance policies. This approach identifies root causes of problems before repairs, allowing targeted remediation to eliminate issues. Future technologies will enable repairing pavements even before visible damage occurs, resulting in significantly lower annual paving costs compared to post-damage repairs.

The objective of this online training workshop is to empower individuals working with PMS systems with a deeper understanding of the damage mechanisms impacting the lifespan of paved and gravel road networks, and how these can be effectively monitored using various technologies. The workshop will present theoretical and practical examples to demonstrate how organizations can adopt more economical proactive maintenance policies. The content will be based on the latest research findings and enriched with the hands-on experiences of the course instructor."

Format

Lectures will be taught over a two-week period with live 2-hour online sessions held on Monday to Thursday of each week. Upon completing the training program, the IRF will administer an online knowledge test. IRF will work with each individual participant to ensure they pass the examination. Participants with a score of 80% on the exam will be awarded a certificate verifying their successful course completion

IRF Global is now recognized as an approved training provider by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), a respected professional body that provides transportation professionals with recognition, support and business insights to accelerate their careers and influence the future of the sector.

Roadscanners Oy
Timo Saarenketo

Dr. Timo Saarenketo is the managing director of Roadscanners Oy. He also works as an Adjunct Professor at the Tampere University. He is internationally known “Road Doctor” specialized in Non-Destructive Testing based road and bridge and other traffic infrastructure asset diagnostics and management. He has specialized and made innovations in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and other Non-Destructive Testing based road and bridge and other traffic infrastructure analysis and diagnostics, pavement design, rehabilitation design, road material surveys and site investigations. A special interest is also low traffic volume road condition management in cold climate areas. Since 1998 Saarenketo has been working in different roles in ROADEX projects, which focuses on road condition and pavement management policies and technologies of low volume roads in Northern Europe.

During recent years, Dr Saarenketo has been working intensively on how modern technologies can be implemented in intelligent asset management processes and how they can improve the productivity of asset management that further leads to cost savings in annual paving costs. Another research task has been the effect of autonomous vehicles and super heavy trucks on pavement structure performance. Since 2015 he has been working in Finland in PEHKO project that has successfully implemented digitalization and new road diagnostics technologies and proactive maintenance in the management of paved road in three areas in Finland. This project has been awarded by IRF in 2018 by Global Road Achievement Award in the category of Asset Preservation & Maintenance Management.
