Roadside Safety is a critical element of road safety. This webinar is designed to provide a very basic introduction to roadside safety in general, and especially to items used to create Forgiving Roads as recommended in the Safe System Approach that is endorsed by the UNRSC Decade of Action. Attendees will be exposed to all aspects of Roadside Safety hardware, including longitudinal barriers, crash cushions, terminals and transitions. They also will be taught the importance of site specific data to determine the most appropriate product for a particular application as well as the current status of the European and United States testing criteria for these items.

With the recent endorsement of Road Safety Assessments and Road Safety Audits by the Multilateral Development Banks “Road Safety Initiative,” it is extremely important that Road Safety Auditors, Road Design Consultants and Road Authorities have a cursory understanding of the steps required to create a Forgiving Road. This webinar will present each of the five steps that must be considered to make a Forgiving Road and will comment on the appropriate actions needed to implement each of these steps:

• Eliminate the Hazard
• Move the Hazard to Create a Clear Zone
• Modify the Hazard to Make it Less Rigid
• Shield the Hazard with a Proper Longitudinal Barrier or Crash Cushion
• Delineate the Hazard

Michael Dreznes
Executive Vice President
International Road Federation

Michael G. Dreznes assumed his current position of executive vice president of the International Road Federation (IRF) in February 2012.

Prior to accepting his position at the IRF, Dreznes was vice president of Barrier Systems Inc. for four years. Dreznes served as the deputy director general of the Washington Program Center of the International Road Federation (IRF) from July 2006 to February 2008. He worked as vice president at Quixote Corporation (Energy Absorption Systems, Inc.) for 20 years starting in 1986.

Dreznes has spent the last 28 years working to make the roads safer around the world. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on roadside safety, promoting the concept of “Forgiving Roads,” and has conducted multiple road safety training seminars on roadside safety, work zone safety, vulnerable user safety and road safety audit in more than 60 countries around the world.

Dreznes is the co-chairman of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) AFB20 (2) Roadside Safety Sub-Committee on International Research Activities, co-chairman of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) Decade of Action Pillar 2: Safer Roads and Mobility Project Group, a member of the PIARC Road Safety Technical Committee 3.2 Design and Operation of Safer Road Infrastructure, a member of TASK FORCE 13 Committee on Work Zone Safety, staff advisor to the IRF Washington Road Safety Working Group, as well as immediate past chairman of the IRF Fellowship Educational Foundation (IREF).

Dreznes lives in Chicago, Illinois with his wife of 41 years, Margaret.
