Data-informed Management of Skid Resistance: A Case Study
Data-informed decision-making is vital for highway engineers. A logistical challenge arises, however, when the decision at hand must be informed by millions of data points of various types originating from numerous sources. How do we present such vast and varying data to an engineer in order for them to make a decision?
A case study on the management of State Highway (SH) roads in New Zealand with regard to the safety issues around poor skid resistance, illustrates how a custom-built asset management tool is the ideal solution to the challenge. Skid Management is an integral part of the safety management program of the New Zealand Transport Agency.
Skid Resistance is measured annually for every 10m of the SH network. Following each survey a list of 10m sites identified as requiring immediate attention is provided to the respective SH Maintenance Contractor to investigate, prioritize, and if treatments are required, complete designs and program remedial work. The sheer volume of the data generated by the survey created a mammoth task for the contractors and Agency alike.
