IRF Distinguishes Mexican Agency with Road Safety Award
The International Road Federation has presented its annual “Find a Way” Global Road Safety Award to the Mexican public toll operator, CAPUFE, on the opening day of the 6th IRF Latin America Regional Congress & Exhibition in Mexico City.
The IRF “Find a Way” Award recognizes outstanding commitment to safer roads by national, regional, or city government and is presented every year as part of IRF’s commitment to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.
CAPUFE, a federal state-owned toll operator with a market share of 45% of the Mexican turnpike infrastructure, has long made road safety an institutional priority. In 2012, it launched a Road Safety Committee chaired by the CEO and comprising senior officials and partners, such as the Internal Organ of Control of CAPUFE, the Mexican Red Cross, and the Ministry of Tourism, supported by Road Safety Working Groups in each of CAPUFE’s regional offices.
- Since their launch, some of the main outputs of these organs have included:
- Road safety inspections completed and field observations reported.
- Field observations solved in terms of road safety countermeasures.
- An information system that oversees the status of remedial action of field observations from road safety inspections.
- Videoconferencing sessions between RSWG, in-house road safety specialists and the Technical Secretariat.
- Collaborators trained by IRF and Speier Road Safety Solutions courses.
- Road safety campaigns.
- Roadside vehicle inspections of commercial vehicles with the Federal Police and the Ministry of Communications and Transport.
- Roadside speed limit enforcement with the Federal Police.
- Road traffic accident simulations with the Federal Police, the Mexican Red Cross and local authorities.
- Prehospital care services.
These measures have delivered sustained results on Mexico’s network of toll roads where the number of crashes per billion vehicle-km decreased and the fatalities per billion vehicle-km were reduced from 32.5 in 2013 to 24.5 in 2017.
