IRF Executive Seminar Series Featured at BRE 2013

For the second year in a row, the IRF held its Roadside and Work Zone Safety executive seminar in Sao Paulo during the Brazil Road Expo. Industry executives attended this year’s seminar — doubling the number from 2012. IRF Executive Vice President Michael Dreznes led the two-day course with significant contributions from industry road safety experts, including local expert Mr. Jose Luiz Fuzaro. More than 80 attendees were present, including representatives from DNIT, DER, CET, manufacturers, distributors, concessionaries, consulting firms and other members of the public and private sectors alike.

Part of the IRF’s Executive Seminar Series, this course focuses on Roadside Safety and Work Zone Safety

Roadside Safety Attendees were instructed regarding all aspects of Roadside Safety, including longitudinal barriers, crash cushions, terminals and transitions. They were introduced to existing products, and were taught the importance of using site-specific data to determine the most appropriate product for a particular application. Upon completion of the Roadside Safety training, attendees had a clear understanding of methods used to identify dangerous roadside hazards and learned how to correctly resolve the situation. Further discussions included best practices and state-of-the-art technologies that can be used to make roadsides safer.

Among the topics discussed was: how to use positive protection, truck mounted attenuators, dynamic variable message signs and flagger training. Upon completion of the Work Zone Safety training, attendees were aware of the recommended procedures for safe work zone design per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Additional exposure was provided to different technologies and methodologies that can be used to make work zones safer.

Costa Rica will host the next IRF Roadside and Work Zone Safety executive seminar June 18–19, in San José.
