Abu Dhabi, April 21, 2025 – The International Road Federation (IRF Global) played a leading role in the 40th edition of GCC Traffic Week, held in Abu Dhabi, by delivering a series of targeted technical and policy-driven initiatives in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Traffic Safety Sector, and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

Regional Seminar Highlights the Dangers of Distracted Driving

As part of Gulf Traffic Week 2025, IRF Global co-organized a high-level seminar titled “No to Distracted Driving,” addressing one of the region’s most pressing road safety challenges. Hosted by Abu Dhabi Mobility and coordinated by the Traffic Safety Sector, the seminar convened delegates from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and the United States.

Participants explored the growing impact of distracted driving, which contributed to 36% of road crashes and 45% of traffic-related fatalities in Abu Dhabi in 2024. The seminar included expert discussions on policy responses, the role of AI-powered traffic monitoring technologies, and the unveiling of a new public awareness campaign developed in partnership with a regional ride-hailing company to promote safe driving practices.

AI and Big Data Training Empowers ITS Professionals

Complementing the policy dialogue, IRF Global also delivered a specialized training course titled “AI and Big Data Applications for Future Traffic and Incident Management.” Hosted by Abu Dhabi Mobility and developed in partnership with Arizona State University, the program was designed for engineers and professionals working in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) sector.

The course covered cutting-edge topics such as machine learning for traffic prediction, AI-driven incident detection, and the application of big data for enhanced traffic operations. Hands-on sessions provided participants with practical experience using real-world data and tools, equipping them with the skills needed to apply emerging technologies in local transport systems.

Advancing IRF Global’s Mission in the GCC

IRF Global’s presence at GCC Traffic Week underscored its mission to promote safer, more efficient, and more sustainable road systems through education, advocacy, and global partnerships. By collaborating with regional authorities such as Abu Dhabi Mobility and the Federal Traffic Council, as well as academic institutions like Arizona State University, IRF continues to support evidence-based strategies that address today’s most urgent transportation challenges.
