Washington, D.C. , June 26, 2025 – The International Road Federation (IRF Global) has taken an important step in redefining its approach to mobility with key outcomes from its June 25 committee meeting. The session, attended by 26 members representing various sectors, highlighted a renewed focus on the future of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
A BROADER IDENTITY FOR A CHANGING SECTOR
Reflecting the evolving demands of the mobility landscape, the committee officially changed its name from the “ITS Committee” to the “ITS & Smart Mobility Committee”. The new title embraces a wider mandate, acknowledging the growing connection between transportation systems, digital technologies, and smart city planning. With this step, IRF reinforces its commitment to building the next generation of mobility; safer, smarter, and more sustainable for all.
LEADERSHIP STRENGTHENED WITH NEW VICE-CHAIR
As part of this strategic shift, the Committee welcomed Oleg V. Pekerman, CEO and CIO of Fortis Consulting Services Corp., as its new Vice-Chair. A long-time IRF member, Mr. Pekerman brings more than 28 years of experience in ITS operations, with a proven track record in major infrastructure deployments, particularly in New York City.
His background includes leadership roles in the development of advanced traffic management systems and smart city infrastructure. His appointment is expected to bring valuable insight and technical strength to the Committee’s work at a time of growing complexity and opportunity in the sector.
COLLABORATING TO MEET TOMORROW’S TRANSPORTATION NEEDS
The IRF ITS & Smart Mobility Committee remains committed to bringing together expertise from the public, private, and academic sectors. As transportation technologies evolve, through innovations like connected vehicles, predictive data systems, and automated mobility, the Committee continues to serve as a platform for shared learning and coordinated action.
Under the chairmanship of Steven Nasser from SABER, UAE, the Committee continues to advance its work through focused task forces, including AI for Predictive Asset Management, Road Adaptation to Autonomous Vehicles, and ITS4Climate.
These task forces are designed to help the sector respond effectively to emerging challenges and support the adoption of scalable, real-world solutions.
