The International Road Federation (IRF Global) has successfully completed its online training program, “Road Safety Audits: From Concept to Results,” held from March 3-13, 2025. Designed for road safety professionals, this intensive program provided advanced technical expertise and practical methodologies essential for conducting effective road safety audits (RSAs) at various stages of infrastructure projects.

GLOBAL PARTICIPATION & EXPERT-LED INSTRUCTION

The program drew transport and infrastructure professionals from across the globe, reflecting the shared global commitment to improving road safety and reducing crash risks. Attendees took part in live lectures, dynamic discussions, and real-world case studies, all guided by Dr. John Griffith, an esteemed road safety expert with a wealth of experience in the field.

STRENGTHENING ROAD SAFETY PRACTICES THROUGH AUDITS

The IRF Global training program equipped participants with the expertise needed to conduct effective road safety audits, investigate crash patterns, and assess infrastructure risks. Through hands-on case studies, attendees applied analytical techniques to identify hazards and develop targeted safety improvements.

The course introduced advanced road safety audit methodologies, including risk appraisal, network screening, and audit implementation. Participants learned to apply data-driven techniques for analyzing crash data and predicting road safety performance. Additionally, the training explored critical design and operational considerations, such as evaluating roadside safety features and traffic control measures. Legal and regulatory frameworks, compliance, liability concerns, and the integration of safety audits into decision-making processes were also key topics covered. Advanced technical tools, including simulation models for virtual inspections and predictive safety assessments, were introduced, providing participants with innovative solutions to enhance road safety.

PATHWAY TO GLOBAL CREDENTIALS

The training concluded with an online knowledge assessment, where participants who achieved a score of 80% or higher were awarded a certificate of completion. Additionally, professionals who completed the program are eligible to apply for the IRF Road Safety Audit Credentials. These include the IRF Road Safety Audit Team Leader and IRF Road Safety Audit Professional credentials, offering a clear pathway for professionals seeking recognition in road safety auditing.

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF ROAD SAFETY AUDITS

Road safety audits play a pivotal role in identifying deficiencies in road design, traffic control, and operational conditions, which contribute to crash risks and severity, enabling professionals to implement targeted safety improvements.
