WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 2026 — The International Road Federation (IRF Global) marked its 78th anniversary on May 5, 2026, reaching another milestone in a history that has closely accompanied the development of the international road and transportation sector.
Founded in 1948, IRF has established a distinctive international presence at the intersection of infrastructure, engineering, policy, and industry. Over 78 years, its work has reflected the changing priorities of transportation—from the growth of international highway networks to the increasingly complex demands of safety, sustainability, digital transformation, and mobility.
A HISTORY SHAPED BY A CHANGING INDUSTRY
Few sectors have undergone as much transformation over the past eight decades as transportation. Road infrastructure has evolved from a largely national concern into an interconnected system shaped by international trade, technological progress, environmental pressures, and rapidly changing mobility patterns.
IRF’s history runs through this transformation. Its international activities have provided a platform for the exchange of technical knowledge and professional experience, while its conferences, training programs, committees, and other initiatives have supported dialogue across regions and disciplines.
The Federation’s long-standing international network has also given it a broad perspective on the challenges confronting road authorities and transportation professionals in different parts of the world.
78 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE
The significance of the anniversary lies not simply in the number of years, but in the continuity behind it. Across successive generations of transportation professionals, IRF has maintained a role in bringing international experience into discussions about the future of roads and mobility.
That continuity remains particularly relevant as the sector enters another period of profound change. Artificial intelligence, connected infrastructure, automation, climate resilience, road safety, and new mobility models are redefining both the opportunities and the responsibilities facing transportation decision-makers.
CONTINUING THE CELEBRATION AT R2T 2026
The 78th anniversary will also be recognized during the 9th IRF Global R2T Conference & Exhibition, taking place November 3–6, 2026, in San Francisco, where an anniversary reception will be held as part of the event program.
Under the theme “Transforming the Future of Mobility,” R2T 2026 will bring together the international transportation community to examine the developments and decisions that will influence the next generation of mobility.
As IRF marks 78 years, the anniversary provides an opportunity to recognize a long institutional legacy while maintaining a clear focus on the road ahead.
