IRF Promotes Sound Transport Asset Management in Asia

Transport asset management principles are becoming increasingly important to help agencies manage their physical assets as they face fewer available resources, higher expectations for customer service, and increased demand for more transparency in the decision process.

Against this background, IRF instructors facilitated a two-day knowledge and experience exchange workshop with staff of the Asian Development Bank's Transport Division.

"In an asset management environment, investment decisions are linked to existing data and targeted performance levels, allowing for trade-offs across different asset classes and investment priorities", noted Dr. Omar Smadi (Iowa State University), one of the course's lead instructors.

A focal area of the workshop was learning to design robust asset management plans by leveraging data sources and management tools, and providing an organizational framework where these plans are implemented in the field.

“Thanks to the workshop, ADB will be able to generate sustained improvement for their focus countries by encouraging Asset Management implementations” concluded Wayne Hatcher, a Senior Principal with Opus International.
