The International Road Federation (IRF) On-line Safe Roads by Design™: Making Roads Safe for all Users certified training program is one of the most comprehensive on-line road safety training programs in the world. Experts in the field will present best practices and state of the art technologies in Roadside Safety, Work Zone Safety, Vulnerable User Safety, Traffic Management and Road Safety Audits over a three week period.

Pavement Management systems have been designed to provide information on the functional and structural condition of roads so that road owners can offer a smooth and safe ride to road users at the lowest possible cost. They also provide reliable information to decision makers about the condition of the road network for maintenance and rehabilitation planning and funding. However, the problem with PMS systems has traditionally been that they have supported reactive maintenance whereby the road is repaired by mainly standard methods after a specified amount of visible damage has occurred on the pavement.

This course is about learning to design with the human in mind. The human is the most complex and variable element of the transportation system, but professionals who learn the human’s design parameters and how to make infrastructure that is compatible with these parameters will help deliver substantial gains in road safety during the second Decade of Action. The first half of the course provides a theoretical foundation and grounding in understanding human limitations, how humans process information, how humans complete the driving tasks, and how humans end up making errors.

This on-line training course is designed to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the basic concepts and recent advances related to pavement design, analysis and construction. Participants will be guided through various interactive course modules to develop skills and knowledge to employ standard guidelines and specifications related to both flexible and rigid pavements.

This course introduces scientific principles for forecasting the benefits of road safety projects. The goal is to estimate and defend reductions in fatalities and serious injuries, to assign dollar valuations to proposed improvements, and to compare these benefits to project or program costs.

This on-line training course will focus on how to manage and implement Performance-based contracts to help road agencies meet their desired outcomes . Agencies that are seeking more effective mechanisms for privatizing maintenance programs will profit by sending key staff to learn from the experience of counterparts in the public and private sectors and from international financing institutions

Road safety audit and inspections serve the common purpose of identifying risk factors related to road design or traffic control that may lead to crashes, or make crashes more severe. In many cases, they also assist network highway operators and city traffic departments in identifying engineering weaknesses and hazardous locations, even in the absence of robust traffic injury data.

Correctly forecasting future traffic demand, and assessing the impacts that construction & rehabilitation projects may have on existing traffic volumes, is a cornerstone of sound financial modelling for road projects, especially those developed using Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).

The main goal of this online training is to introduce the fundamentals of sustainability relevant to the transportation infrastructure materials. Various aspects, such as the use of recycled materials, the environmental impacts during the life cycle of the infrastructure, and the life cycle cost analysis methods and tools will be introduced.

Traffic simulation is the mathematical modelling of transportation systems (highways, arterial routes, roundabouts, grid systems, etc.) through the application of processes and specialized software to assist the design and management of transportation systems.
