IRF opens wide-reaching discussions on fostering a common culture of road safety, environmental sustainability and resilient road design in the Caribbean.

On April 10, 2014, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly requested the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN regional commissions to facilitate organization of the Third UN Global Road Safety Week in 2015. The Week will be held May 4-10, 2015 under the theme “children and road safety”. The aim of the week will draw attention to the urgent need to better protect children and generate action on the measures needed to do so.

Delegates from ten countries participated in a seven-day IRF Safer Roads by Design© Across 6 Continents Certified Training Program that focused on Roadside Safety, Work Zone Safety, Vulnerable User Safety, Road Safety Audit and Traffic Engineering with a slant toward Motorcycle Safety in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from March 15 to March 24, 2015.

The “Safer Roads By Design™: Across Six Continents Seminar” is one of the most comprehensive road safety training programs in the world. Experts from a variety of countries will present best practices and state of the art technologies in Roadside Safety, Work Zone Safety, Vulnerable User Safety, Traffic Management and Road Safety Audits over a ten day period. The purpose of this training program is to help road authorities understand what can be done to help them meet their Decade of Action commitment to reduce fatalities by 50 percent by 2020. The training program will focus on: Roadside Safety, Work Zone Safety, Vulnerable User Safety, and Road Safety Audits.

The Kenneth A. Stonex Roadside Safety Award was established in 1991 to recognize lifetime contributions to roadside safety. It was originally named for Ken Stonex, a General Motors employee who was a pioneer for roadside safety long before the seriousness of run-off-road crashes was recognized by most transportation agencies. The Transportation Research Board’s AFB20 Committee on roadside safety now presents the award annually to a deserving individual during TRB’s Annual Meeting.
The International Road Federation recognizes the significant role of the World Bank and other regional Multilateral Development Banks in influencing quality standards for road infrastructure and the broader transport system across all the countries where they operate.
